SAR Applications – Proof of Service Battle of Pt Pleasant

Very recently, NSSAR Genealogist General John Sinks made a ruling that will affect all new SAR applications for proof of service of patriot ancestors who were at the Battle of Point Pleasant.

Here is the basic ruling in regards to service of patriot ancestors who were at the Battle of Point Pleasant, as very recently received by the WVSSAR Registrar from a NSSAR Staff Genealogist:

Genealogist General John Sinks has recently ruled that the long held resource used to approve service at Point Pleasant, Poffenbarger’s “The Battle of Point Pleasant A Battle of the Revolution October 10th, 1774″ is not reliable, as it lists units which are proven not to have been on the field the day of the battle, and fails to list others proven to have been on the field that day.

G. G. Sinks sent out a memo to all State Points of Contact on May 16, outlining this new interpretation, and listing those Captains he has determined as being present at Point Pleasant on the day of the Battle.

It is now the responsibility of the applicant to provide muster rolls or other acceptable documentation listing the unit in which the prospective Patriot served, along with proof that unit
was present at Point Pleasant on the day of the Battle.

The May 16, 2015 memo of NSSAR Genealogist General John SinksĀ  lists various important subjects in regards to SAR applications, such as:

  • Updating Your SAR Applications
  • Pre-1985 DAR and CAR Applications
  • DAR and CAR Supplemental Applications
  • Documentation that Does Not Meet SAR Standards
  • Proof of Service at the Battle of Pt Pleasant
  • Revolutionary Tax Reports
